SMD Surface Mount Ceramic Antennas
SMD Ceramic Antennas for Compact Wireless Devices
SMD ceramic antennas, also known as ceramic chip antennas, provide a compact solution for integrating wireless connectivity directly onto the host PCB. Their small footprint makes them well suited to space-constrained electronic products, while surface mount construction supports automated assembly and scalable manufacturing. As part of Antenova’s Embedded Antennas portfolio, SMD ceramic antennas combine compact dimensions with a design approach suited to high-volume connected devices.
When should I choose an SMD ceramic antenna?
An SMD ceramic antenna is a strong option when PCB space, product dimensions and manufacturing efficiency are important design considerations. The antenna is soldered directly onto the host PCB, eliminating the need for a separate RF cable or adhesive antenna installation and allowing it to become an integrated part of the electronic assembly.
Antenova’s SMD ceramic antenna solutions can support wireless technologies such as GNSS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® and other frequencies depending on the selected antenna design.
What should you consider when integrating an SMD ceramic antenna?
SMD antenna performance is closely linked to its integration into the host device. PCB dimensions, available ground plane, antenna position and clearance, nearby components and enclosure materials can all influence impedance matching, efficiency and radiation performance.
The antenna layout and recommended keep-out area should therefore be considered early in the PCB design rather than after the electronics and enclosure have already been finalised. A suitable matching network also allows the antenna to be tuned within the finished device, helping compensate for effects introduced by the PCB, enclosure and surrounding components.
Why is antenna integration important?
A compact SMD antenna cannot be evaluated independently from the product in which it operates. Changes to PCB layout, ground plane dimensions, enclosure materials or nearby components can shift antenna resonance and affect overall wireless performance.
Considering the antenna as part of the complete RF system from the beginning of product development can reduce integration risk and help avoid costly PCB or enclosure redesigns later in the development process.
Typical applications
SMD ceramic antennas are suitable for compact IoT devices, trackers, healthcare products, industrial sensors, smart meters, monitoring equipment, gateways and other connected products requiring low-profile PCB-mounted wireless connectivity.
Why choose Antenova?
Antenova combines compact SMD antenna technology with extensive antenna integration and RF optimisation expertise. Our engineering support helps customers evaluate antenna placement, PCB layout and matching within the complete device, helping achieve reliable wireless performance while reducing development risk.
