When should I choose an SMD laminate antenna?

SMD laminate antennas are particularly suitable for products where compact dimensions, direct PCB integration and efficient manufacturing are important design requirements. The antenna is soldered directly onto the host PCB, removing the need for a separate RF cable or adhesive mounting arrangement and allowing the antenna to become an integrated part of the device architecture.

What should you consider when integrating an SMD laminate antenna?

The performance of an SMD laminate antenna is closely connected to the design of the host device. PCB dimensions and ground plane, antenna position and clearance, nearby components and enclosure materials can influence impedance matching, efficiency and radiation performance.

The recommended PCB layout and antenna keep-out area should therefore be considered early in product development. Provision for an appropriate matching network also allows the antenna to be optimised within the final device and can help compensate for effects introduced by the PCB, enclosure and surrounding components.

Why is early antenna integration important?

Leaving antenna selection and placement until late in product development can significantly restrict the available RF design options. Changes to PCB dimensions, ground plane, component placement or enclosure construction may affect antenna tuning and wireless performance.

Considering the antenna during the initial PCB and mechanical design stages gives engineers greater opportunity to optimise its position and integration before the product architecture becomes fixed. This can reduce redesign risk and help shorten the path towards a reliable wireless implementation.
